this is such a heartbreaking yet hopeful read of aang. i love studies of him and this strikes the perfect balance between his tragic history and his relentless optimism, especially in the way he sees azula and ozai and his conflicts with both, but how he persists anyway

The dark part of Katara that threatens to overtake her when there's no outlet for the anger is a thundering voice in her head. She could simply blood-bend Azula to her will; control Azula's body to control her destructive fire. Threat neutralized, and their enemy at Katara's mercy. Disappointment might chase at Katara's heels, the knowledge that she's sunk to a level of depravity, of power, that is better served by the ruthless Fire Nation invaders, but that's a concern for the future.

It seemed like a poor choice to her. It wasn’t her place to say, but, well, if they wanted someone young then wasn’t 17 too young? Wouldn’t it have made sense to have centred things around someone with just a bit more experience, maybe someone who was 21? Maybe they should have just asked her outright, she wouldn’t have said no. She would have happily done it, but they’d never bothered to ask, instead going directly to that Team 8 girl.

I FUCKING LOVE MESS!!!!!! rika as the stereotypical idol rebel and sakura as this stilted awkward girl a year away from stumbling into massive worldwide recognition and confidence and maturity.... it just WORKS so damn well. i love rika's attitude and voice so much and the way sakura tries to kiss her way out and it just backfires massively is like hilarious

In the simplest terms, this story can be read as a gothic triangle of struggle, attachment, and desire between the ingenue Shi Qingxuan (a prototypical gothic heroine), the predatory guardian Shi Wudu (reminiscent of Roderick Usher, among others), and the outsider He Xuan (a Byronic hero by anyone’s measure.) A patriarch exerts control over the sexuality of a lesser status kin member, until this control is challenged by a dark stranger. This stranger represents the possibility of external threat, but in fact provides the possibility of a liberatory escape from the constraints of The Family, until being revealed in the end to be the violent realization of that potential danger. Meaty enough, but pretty straightforward, and not the kind of thing that would motivate me to write a little book about it. There are some wrinkles here. Wrinkles....... of GENDER.

this is a zine by my fedi mutual/friend roland and it is ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. i haven't even read the source material but i paid for a hard copy of this because i've read roland's analysis before and they are a fantastic writer, both of fanfiction and non-fiction essays/meta. and they KILLED IT WITH THIS he has me wanting to read this long ass danmei web novel now for a sub-plot ship that lasts one arc... it's a delightful and enriching read especially if you have even a passing interest in anything gothic.
